In Your Essence

By Yani B.

Girl, lay down hair. Drop your shoulders and loosen your eyebrows. Put a hoodie on. Maybe sneakers, and only moisturize your face. Don’t feel like getting pretty? Well, it’s a good thing the coat keeping your spirit warm is all that you need. It’s about how you make people feel and how you sink into your essence. Are you comfortable in your own skin? Can you stand up for yourself without wearing a mask? Don’t force the process, just be. I know you find it difficult to believe me due to the unforeseen. Time moves with a quickness. Your shadow will never leave you behind. Rub the center of your heart when you question your effort. Something is enough, and enough is better than nothing at all. It is you who fulfills the spirit. That gives everything around you purpose. You pour into an empty cup, you give the sun something to look forward to. The moon is always pleased to kiss you goodnight. And life appreciates your company, as it finds gratitude in your divine uniqueness.

This piece is a part of the “In the moment” collection. This literature is a reminder to relax within the uncomfortable moments. And to not force myself to be “put together” at all times when I don’t feel like it. The world can be demanding at times, and fears tend to creep in and cause anxiety. So, during those moments, the last thing I want to do is “put myself together”. All I want to do is relax in the moment as I am. To be comfortable with the natural beauty that I have and be grateful that elements as beautiful as the sun and moon never forsake me. They always show up even when I don’t feel at 100%. I believe that those natural elements find me to be enough just the way I am. Put together or not.

Don’t get me wrong, I love putting my lashes on, fixing my hair, and wearing dresses that show off my figure, but sometimes, when it’s one of those days, when I just don’t have the patience to wait for the glue on the lashes to dry before applying them. I just practice reminding myself that I am enough, beautiful, and deserving the way I am, with all the acne on my face from period hormones, my twist sticking out of my crochet locs, and my bloated stomach, which just means that I either had a great meal or my body is just working for me. Life waits for no one, and it’s beautiful to feel content with yourself in general. To be ready for what’s to come and what’s expected, like my dreams and goals, regardless of perfection. I hope this piece resonates with you, as it was written on the whim of how I felt today. Looking forward to more coming!
