I grew up playing Game Boys, the Nintendo DS, the Xbox, and the PSP. I enjoyed coming home after school and playing Bratz, Dungeon Defenders, Sims, Spiderman, and other games. However, that was not all I did.

I was also fortunate enough to take dance classes. Twice a week, I was taking ballet, modern, hip-hop, African, and jazz classes from elementary school to high school. I also had music lessons, where I learned how to play the guitar.

By the time I got to high school, social media became a part of my life, and it has been a battle to extract my co-dependency on it. To help myself, I decided to pursue other things as a form of entertainment by tapping into my creativity.

Rather than rotting my brain and feeling guilty for not pouring time into creating or producing, I made a change and it feels great! So, if you’re on the same route and want to put your focus elsewhere, I am sharing a list of things you can do in lieu of doomscrolling. The list I am providing is of skills you can learn on YouTube as well.

  1. Make your own clothes (Sewing/Crocheting)
  2. Read a book
  3. Start a Blog
  4. Make content & schedule the post
  5. Write poems/short stories for fun
  6. Design a website
  7. Study the Bible (Pray)
  8. Journal
  9. Bake or learn a new recipe
  10. Upholster furniture
  11. Garden
  12. Organize (digital space & home)
  13. Listen to podcast interviews of your interest
  14. DIY body care products
  15. Paint
  16. Make jewelry
  17. Color in a coloring book
  18. Make an anime
  19. Volunteer
  20. Try out a different hairstyle
  21. Exercise
  22. Yoga/Stretch/Meditate
  23. Start a podcast

The list can go on and on, but you have options. Don’t let your life pass you by without learning something or discovering other interests you may have. Social media can be entertaining, but it can also be a time killer. It is a great tool to learn new skills. So rather than letting it use you, you use it. Have fun!
