This week, I got creative. I found a pack of unused wrapping curls in the closet and I wanted to try something different, other than my traditional faux loc hairstyle. After watching a few TikTok and YouTube videos on how to achieve a crochet hairstyle, I got to work. I felt focused, excited, and determined, and I will say, my excitement was well deserved and I want to share this with you.

Take a look!

The perk of hairstyle is the duration, you can complete this within 1-2 hours or less. But I’ll be honest with you, if you’re new to braiding and crocheting it may take you a little longer, so have grace, Another perk is that this style takes minimal effort. Trust me, I tend to be lazy when it comes to my hair sometimes but if you share similar tendencies, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to achieve this look.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Crochet hook
  • Rubber Bands
  • Gel (Optional)
  • Hair Pins
  • Pre-looped afro-textured crochet hair (I used Boho Locs wrapping hair, but I think it’s discontinued. However you can use spring curls or human hair)
  • Hair scissors

Instructions:

Step 1: Preparation

  • Section the Top of Your Hair: With freshly washed and moisturized hair, part your hair from ear to ear across the crown.
  • Create Rows and Columns: Divide this section into about 3 rows and 8-10 columns of evenly-sized squares (adjust the size based on your hair thickness and desired braid size).

Option 1: For each box, tie the rubber band around the root of the hair, loosely, then braid the hair into a box braid and secure the ends with a rubber band.

Option 2: For each box just tie the rubber band around the root of the hair, loosely.

  • Connect: Tie a rubber band around each braid or loose hair (columns), securing it towards the back of the head.
  • Cornrow: The rest of the hair at the back of the head (6-7 rows).
  • Secure: Pin your hair making a flat base.

Step 2: Prepare the Remaining Hair

  1. Install the Crochet Hair
    • Open the latch of your crochet hook and insert the loop of the hair through the hook. If not pre-looped, fold the hair to create a loop in the middle.
    • Insert the hook into a cornrow then secure the hair into a knot by pulling the ends of the hair through the loop.
    • Repeat the process until the whole head is covered with hair.
  2. Shape and Style
    • Once all the crochet hair is installed, pull apart some of the curls for a frizzed look
    • After, use scissors to trim and shape the afro to your desired length and style.
    • Fluff the hair gently with your hands to add volume.

Step 3: Maintenance Tips:

  • Sleep with an extra-large satin bonnet or scarf to protect the hair and reduce frizz.
  • If needed, refresh the afro by fluffing and re-shaping it.
